Our workshop to Venice - Cavallo india at Homo Faber 2026

This year, Cavallo travels from its workshop in India to Venice as part of Homo Faber 2026, carrying with it a piece that feels deeply connected to the way we have come to understand craft. Winged Gardener brings together leather, zardozi, dabka, silk and gold thread in a sculptural study of the bird as nature’s earliest gardener, carrying seeds across landscapes and quietly sustaining cycles of renewal. Built slowly over months and through many hands, the work transforms techniques historically associated with surface and ornament into volume, anatomy and form. To see it leave the intimacy of our workshop and enter Homo Faber is, for us, a continuation of the same journey: an Indian language of making travelling outward, finding new contexts while remaining rooted in the hands and knowledge that formed it.

There is a part of every piece that belongs only to the workshop where it spends months surrounded by the people making it while its surfaces continue to evolve and its final form slowly begins to reveal itself.This is our most sacred space, where drawing meets material, where embroidery becomes form, and where the instinct of the karigar enters into conversation with the intent of the designer. Here an idea is allowed to change as it moves from thought into matter and the drawing begins to encounter the temperament of leather while embroidery finds volume and the designer’s intention meets the karigar’s instinct for what a material can hold, resist or become. Eventually the piece leaves the workshop and enters another world. Yet before it belongs to an exhibition, a collector or a place its first history has already been written here through the hands and the many quiet hours that gave it form.

The Indian Dream - A Collaborative Cover For SVASA Life

Art at Cavallo India goes beyond physical confines - it is a means of communication and dialogue. Our pieces are designed to be storytellers, often requiring introspection to uncover the layers of stories they hold. One such story took shape from an. An idea An Amalgam Witnessing the coming together of the lotus and the leopard as a realisation of the Indian dream. Set to the background of Bhavya Ramesh’s store in Mumbai this collaborative cover, commissioned by Svasa Life is a glimpse of opulent Indian expression, with exquisite craftsmanship highlighting each character. Hand embroidered onto a photograph, with gold zari and dabka this piece reached its realisation after 200 man hours of work and is a true culmination of the Indian Dream.

The idea of this series was born from the fact that art is not just meant to be on walls it’s not meant to be confined by a frame, art grows and lives in an environment that nurtures it. Which is why for this series we decided to do “An artworks day out” and off-course we started with our city Delhi, through this series we see how our piece explores the colours, the vibrancy, the moods and the people of Delhi. Through this series we contemplate our theory of a viewer's perspective on art and how maybe art can have a perspective of its viewers too.
