Cavallo’s sculptures mark a natural evolution of a practice that has long explored embroidery beyond surface decoration. Here, hand embroidery moves into three dimensions, allowing leather, thread, metal and ornament to become structural as much as decorative.
Each sculpture begins with form. Leather is shaped and stretched over the underlying volume before being worked slowly by Cavallo’s karigars. Techniques traditionally associated with textiles and ceremonial ornamentation begin to behave differently as stitches follow curvature, ornament articulates anatomy and embroidery gives expression to mass, movement and character.
The resulting works occupy an unusual space between sculpture, textile and collectible design. Leather is no longer simply a surface, but becomes skin and structure, holding tension and responding to the hand.
At its heart, the practice reflects Cavallo’s belief in craft as a living language. Inherited knowledge is carried forward not through repetition, but by allowing it to enter unfamiliar territories. Each sculpture holds the traces of its making, bringing together material experimentation and generations of handwork to create a new experience of form.
